    Jenny de Jong Gierveld, PhD, is Professor emeritus, Faculty Social Sciences, VU University, Amsterdam. She was director of the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in the period , followed by a permanent fellowship of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and currently an honorary fellowship of NIDI. Her research addresses partner relationships and living arrangements (marriage, remarriage, LAT, living alone, co-residence with adult children), social networks and well-being (quality of life) of older adults. A particular focus has been on loneliness and the construction of the De Jong Gierveld loneliness scale.

    Recent publications addressed theoretical models and empirical outcomes regarding the factors behind the onset and continuation of loneliness both at the individual and the country level, and the possibilities of preventing loneliness.  Next to that, research outcomes regarding the social embedment and care arrangements of older adults in LAT relationships have been published.
