He graduated from the State Higher School of Acting in Kraków and performed in such theatres as the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk and the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw.

    Acting career

    Cybulski made his debut in at the Wybrzeże Theatre. His first film role was in Generation in In he gained recognition for his role in Ashes and diamonds, which contributed to his status as an icon of Polish cinema. His interpretation of the character of Maciek Chełmicki, a young member of the anti-communist underground, became legendary. Critics compared him to James Dean, noting his modernity and manner on screen.

    Zbigniew Cybulski was born 3 November in a small village of Kniaże near Śniatyń, Poland (now a part of Kolomyia Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine). After World War II he joined the Theatre Academy in Kraków. He graduated in and moved to Gdańsk, where he made his stage debut in Leon Schiller's Wybrzeże Theatre. Also, with his friend Bogumił Kobiela, Cybulski founded a famous student theatre, the Bim-Bom. In the early s, Cybulski moved to Warsaw, where he shortly joined the Kabaret Wagabunda.
