    Elizabeth Pilliod Regarding the Hebrew in Bronzino’s Holy Family for Bartolomeo Panciatichi In connection with the exhibition Bronzino: Artist and Poet at the Court of the Medici, I was asked to write a short entry for Bronzino’s splendid Holy Family in Vienna [Fig. 1].1 Among a number of important details and questions concerning this painting is the Hebrew inscription painted on the book held by the Virgin.2 However, before addressing the meaning of this inscription a brief review of the history of the painting would be useful. Our earliest information to date is that the Holy Family was part of the Medici collections, although when it entered them is not known. It arrived in Vienna in 1792 as part of an exchange of pictures between the Florentine and Viennese galleries.3 The subject is the Holy Family with St. John the Baptist, and includes an older woman to the upper left who has been identiied as either St. Elizabeth, the mother of the Baptist, or St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin.4 The irst scholar to connect the painting with a particular commission known to have been undertaken by Bronzino was Fritz Goldschmidt, who proposed that the Vienna painting was one of the two “quadri grandi di Nost
